JAPAN EARTHQUAKE: CAN YOU THINK OF A TITLE?

The fabulous Mari Kurisato is napping in her Denver bunker, but before she nodded off, she produced this stunning piece of art for the cover of the book I'm editing (but YOU are writing, remember? Guidelines right here, clock is ticking).

Well, what title and subtitle do you think would fit? A panel of experts (Our Man, Our Woman and Our Mother-in-Law) will stay sober long enough to choose the one we like the best.

Leave your suggestions in the comments below.

It's gonna be a long night, but an enjoyable one for a change ;)

Like it. Minimalist. Thought of Aftershock myself, but maybe that's too negative?

Anonymous said...

Also, Aftershock sounds a bit too much like an alcopop. It's a pity After the Quake is already taken.

Why not try and pull a phrase out of one of the pieces? See why jumps put at you.

Long time reader, first time poster, btw. Keep up the good work.

With no disrespect I think '仕方がない' should get in there, as it represents the best and the worst of the Japanese attitude to adversity.

Japan: The Three Trials

I think using a title that mentions the three devastating parts of this disaster might be good. One of the biggest earthquakes the world has ever seen, the tsunami has did most of the damage and took most of the lives and the nuclear plant that caused the world to worry.

I emailed my suggestion but in case it gets lost in the deluge of emails I'll post it here.

Aid Japan - A story of the world united.

Mr. Salaryman said...

Well, I think it kinda depends... The title should probably be the earthquake name or referring to that; Tohoku Earthquake, Tohoku Disaster, Northern Japan disaster etc.

the subtitle could tie into the theme; "reaching out", "hands across the ocean" or whatever Mission song you have in your head?

Janne Morén said...

Tasteless, but on theme for your blog:

"Shaken but not Stirred", subtitle "Caught the Quake, Sidestepped the Tsunami".

Actual, serious suggestion: I agree with Anonymous that you'll probably find the best title from reading the submissions. Let the content decide the title.

"Raising the Sun:
Stories from the Tohoku Disasters."

My suggestion. Simple and understated - and it kind of complements the cover illustration?

I like the idea of calling it "3/11/11" but make the "3" really prominent to signify the three disasters. If not that, maybe something that symbolizes what the book is trying to do, like "Doing Our Best" or simply "help" either in Japanese.

Maybe at the top have 「日本」 and then the subtitle 「皆の体験」

I like what owwls said:
"Raising the Sun:
Stories from the Tohoku Disasters."

Particularly the first part. ♥

What about simply "Shaken"
with the appropriately windy and portentous subtitle
"an anthology of thoughts on the Great Tohoku Earthquake"

I have posted the link above to show what it might look like as an image. I guess I got too excited and forgot to post the actual title here as a text.

Title: The day Japan was Shook
subtitile: and when the change started

I think this incident has "shook" not only Japan but the global society in many levels. I am seeing 311 as a day of a big change in the global community and awareness. Hence the title.

Keep it minimalist. No words. Just numbers. Nothing overtly dramatic.

M9.0
03/11/11

OR

03/11/11
M9.0

If there's a word or two needed, I personally would not want the "sun" reference. Why need words when it's apparent (see this superb artwork).

The Great Tohoku Quake
sub: Testimonies

Colm, Ireland said...

I would agree with the last but change it to
Testimony

sub: Stories from the Tohoku Quake (and the date)

Also, I have been following your project since you tweeted the original idea and I am filled with admiration. I wish you every success and can promise that I will definitely buy a copy, no matter what you call it!

Ok here are some ideas.

The Wake (totally stole this from Craig Mod)

Earth and Water

Earth, Water, and Sun

Pavi said...

If you're selling this overseas I suggest avoiding local references and choosing something instantly recognizable (e.g. use "Japan" rather than "Tohoku").

Similarly date references differ from place to place. 03/11/11? 11/03/11?
I suggest "March" instead of "03".

I like a minimal approach too as others have suggested.

"Japan 2011: M9.0"

with perhaps (if you think it's necessary) a subtitle "The Ripple Effect", to convey not only the immediate responses to the quake/tsunami but also its ramifications to the world at large, and the effect anyone anywhere can have by giving help.

Title suggestion: The Tohoku Trifecta.

TITLE brainstorm fodder

I really like the *Hope for Japan* meme that replaced the *Pray for Japan* meme
Even seeing just HOPE with the O being represented by a red rising sun circle.

H○PE
H○PE for Japan

Using the 9.0 has a nuance of the Web 2.0 semantic meme

Japan 9.0
Hope 9.0
Post 9.0

Twitter seemed to have played a big role - hashtag in the title?

#hopeforjapan
#japanquake
#quakebook <-- personal fave

Out there
Shaken, Stirred and Irradiated
Wiggly Wobbly World
8 Feet East

I think this project is awesome.
Hope to give something.

Title: Pulled Together
Subtitle: an anthology from what happened #Japan #March11

Title makes me think of both the Japanese people, and also the way this book was put together, which I think is impotent too. Also goes with the art.

Good luck! I'm following on twitter would like to buy a copy.

Thanks,
@The_Farnster

@The_Farnster said...

Important.

datadub said...

Final 2 cents.

The title should be a simple title that is short unique (& Google-able)and a subtitle that is very concise about the books content.

for example:

#quakebook
A Testimony to the Great Tohoku Earthquake from the Foreign Community in Japan

BiggerInJapan said...

just to have all suggestions in one place:

title: "shaken"
sub: "a world upside down"

Joli said...

Found you via Twitter, so I like the #quakebook idea as well... for subtitle, maybe something like :Tales of Reflection and Resilience in Japan?

Martin J Frid said...

I vote for "Shaken not stirred" or "Japan 9.0"

The latter shows resilience and the ganbaru power that I hear every day here. Let's rebuild! That means, lets make it better, more sustainable, more healthy. The first, well, I just like it!
