Quelle suprise, au Japonaise, c'est une naff 80s TV series

Go East young man,
As far as you can,
Anjin-san.
Of course, you will end up in mysterious Japan.

While you may expect to catch
CNN and NHK news at 10,
I'll wager you never thought you'd turn on the box
and see repeats of Bergerac.

I have a friend enrolled in a Japanese university that wears pastel suits, swills brandy, smokes cigars and could quite possibly be the biggest tosser I know. If this is the image Japan sees of exotic, Western European men, no wonder said friend seems to get by swimmingly in the Far East...

You have accurately described (and alienated) most of Our Man's readership. Not one for pastel suits, but could happily go the brandy and cigar route. You start off with a craving for manga, and end up with the Panama hat and attitudes to match.

Pardon me, could you pass the Grey Poupon?

In retrospect I happen to own a couple of pastel sport coats and have a penchant for cigars and fine liquor...while I may berate the trend in print I most certainly embrace it in practice. This pot is starting to wonder if that kettle is as black as he thought it was.

Creepy is right. Remember though, this was from 1987-ish and was in the Channel Islands, so there is a good chance you are actually gazing upon Frenchies. But, point taken.
