Our Man wouldn't dream of joining the you-know-nothing-about-Japan oneupmanship of the insufferable variety of gaijin in Japan, but, really, this Flu prompts karaoke boom in Japan is a load of bollocks.
Pfft, Jiji Tsushin is carrying a story about hordes of bored schoolkids flocking to the centres of Osaka and Kobe so it's not so far fetched (though the only mention of karaoke in particular is one anecdote where some kids were refused entry because it was still nominally within school hours).
Our Man doesn't doubt that some kids went to karaoke instead of milling around looking moody on the streets, but it was hardly a boom in karaoke. Our Man is just jealous. When does he get his week off?

the BBC is trying to distract attention away from the fact that the party they represent has been caught with it's fingers in the till.
